New Small-Business Start-Up Course Offered at WCCC Adult Education—Classes begin July 18!

Jul 12, 2023

Do you have a skill or hobby that you would like to turn into a small business? Wayne County Career Center’s Adult Education Department is offering a one day a week, 10-week course designed to help people take their first steps towards business ownership. The course will cover everything you should develop and consider before starting a business including identifying your customers, designing your business name and logo, product or service development, how to market your business, consider start-up costs, risks and what steps need to be taken to legally register and start your business. You will also have the opportunity to earn a credential in customer service through this program.

What sets this program apart is that students will not just learn business theory, but rather every step of the way students will be developing their own business idea so when the course ends, they will walk away with actual materials to use for their own business start-up. Our course instructor is not only a teacher but also owns her own small business and has 20 years of small business experience.

This course will meet 1 day a week beginning July 18, (on Tuesdays) from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Each week the program will focus on a specific entrepreneurship subject: marketing basics and customer identification, understanding your market and researching your competition, business organization and risk management, developing business promotional materials including logo design, product development and prototyping, sales and display/site design and creating a business plan including start-up costs and revenue projections. For each subject, students will learn the subject then take their own business idea and apply the subject covered to it, creating actual professional-grade materials they will be able to use for their own business.

In addition to the small business start-up course, a 6-week website design and social media marketing course is planned for the fall from November 7 to December 12, 2023. Several other courses currently offered at WCCC are also available to help small business owners such as Basic Accounting, QuickBooks, and Microsoft Excel.
