Summer Youth (SY) Work Experience 2023

Jan 31, 2023

Coleman Employment Services is looking to identify employers in your area who would be willing to be a worksite location for area high school students to take part in possibly their first paid work experience this summer. Coleman provides liability and workers compensation insurance and pays the students’ and job coach/monitor wages.

·       Students are referred for SY by their high school guidance counselors through Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). OOD sends the referrals to the employment provider, Coleman.

·       Students are typically 15 – 17 years old.

·       There are two SY sessions offered. A new group of students are assigned to each of the two sessions.

·       Each session is for 5 weeks. A work week is 20 hours – usually Monday thru Friday.

·       Coleman provides a SY monitor (job coach) for each worksite with a maximum of four students.

·       The monitor is on site for the entire work day.

·       Coleman pays the students’ wages and provides liability insurance. A copy of our liability insurance can be provided.

·       The first day of the session is an orientation day. There is no work on this day. It is 100% classroom time but is held at the worksite, if the facility approves and can accommodate this request.

Things to be discussed with each employer:

·       The employer will determine the hours for the workday. Typically something like 9:00 am – 1:30 pm or 10:00 am – 2:30 pm, Monday thru Friday.  [If work hours involve meal hours, an extra 30-minute non-paid meal break is provided as part of the workday.] Students are directed to provide their own lunch.

·       Worksite dress code

·       The specific work tasks the students will be doing (sweeping floors, grounds upkeep, food prep, etc.) and any specific instructions/suggestions the employer wants provided to the students prior to the start of the program.

·       Can the worksite accommodate the first day orientation session? Is there a meeting/classroom area to accommodate up to five people?

Session 1 will begin on June 6 – July 7 2023

Session 2 will begin on July 10 – August 11 2023
