Just Keep Moving

Landre McCloud • Sep 02, 2022

Chamber member Becky Jewell had a high stress career with long hours. While she had always been active, she had neglected an exercise routine. When she retired, she knew she wanted to establish a regular exercise regimen and to see what else she could do.

Jewell went to Aultman Orrville Sports and Wellness to develop an exercise plan. She began working with an athletic trainer. She knew at her age it was important to work on strength training. Her trainer was able to determine the right exercises for her and push her further than she would push herself.

While she thoroughly enjoys her training at Aultman Orrville Sports and Wellness, her true passion is bicycling.

“Bicycling on trails is my favorite form of exercise,” said Jewell, board member for Rails to Trails of Wayne County. “I enjoy riding at a slower pace, seeing the beauty that surrounds me, and the safety of a trail.”

“As I get older, I will transition to a recumbent bike,” Jewell explained. “This will allow me to continue the exercise I love, while putting my safety first.”

Jewell exercises six days a week and bicycles as often as possible. She also enjoys doing yardwork, which she counts as exercise too.

“There are so many choices in Orrville for exercise,” Jewell stated. “Find what suites you. Start small, and don’t get discouraged.”

She recommends building up to your workout. “For example, if you want to start walking, begin by walking to the end of your block and back. Then next time walk a little further.”

“We are lucky to have so many exercise facility options in Orrville, but we are blessed to have the Heartland Trail right here!” Jewell exclaimed.

“My advice is to get out and do whatever you can and what you like to do.”

“Getting started is the hardest part,” Jewell suggested. “Find what it is that you enjoy and just start. The buddy system works well too!”

Jewell explained that having her husband by her side has helped to keep her motivated. They encourage each other.

“Jim loves to bicycle as well, so that’s been a great motivator for me.”

“My advice to others is to just keep moving!”
